Talk of the Turnstile – Issue 16

Welcome to Talk of the Turnstile, issue 16.

International matches now put to bed until March; Malky Mackay is back in work,  and former German goalkeeper to join the WWE.

Home nations England and Scotland both tasted victory in their qualifying games whilst Wales held Belgium to a draw. And it was actually the Republic of Ireland who the Scots overcame to win 1-0. Northern Ireland lost for the first time with defeat to Romania.

England went on to face Scotland in a friendly which ended 3-1 to the former as Rooney scored a brace to move within three goals of Bobby Charlton’s scoring record.

Dick Advocaat and Claudio Ranieri both left their jobs in the international break following less than satisfactory performances; Serbia lost 3-1 to Denmark whilst Greece lost at home to the Faroe Islands. Daley Blind suffered a serious looking knee ligament injury which will cause concern for Louis Van Gaal, something we will look at later on.

Malkay Mackay has been appointed manager of Wigan Athletic, an appointment that is sure to cause much controversy. Mackay will only be focussed on improving Wigan’s standing in the Championship and will block out any negative distractions from the media.

Let’s jump to Sports Entertainment now and the World Wrestling Entertainment otherwise known as WWE. Former Werder Bremen and Germany keeper Tim Wiese is all set to sign a contract with the company to become a WWE wrestler on the NXT brand. NXT is the developmental roster, where wrestlers will hone their skills before moving on to the main roster of RAW and Smackdown. Wiese is not the first keeper to try his hand out in NXT as Stuart Tomlinson, better known to wrestling fans as Hugo Knox, left the football world in 2013 and signed with the WWE. We wondered what Wiese’s wrestling name could be; the best we came up with was The Keeper and his finisher would be the Shot Stopper, why not put your ideas into the comment box below.
