Welcome to another edition of Talk of the Turnstile, bringing a weekly round up of all things football and SoccerStarz!
This week saw the quarter finals of both Europe’s Premier competitions, The Champions League and Europa League and with some mouth-watering ties on show, it was a great week for the football fan.
We will start with the Champions League, where Tuesday saw Barcelona welcome Atletico Madrid to the Nou Camp and Bayern Munich travel to Old Trafford to face Manchester United.
Both games were fairly tight affairs, finishing 1-1 at the end of play. Key incidents were the injury to Diego Costa, which might rule him out of the return leg at the Vicente Calderon, for Atleti and the sending off of Bastian Schweinstieger, for a second yellow card for Bayern. Schweini isn’t the only player that will miss the second leg of the Munich/United match as Javi Martinez received another yellow meaning he too will be suspended.
In the Wednesday night games Chelsea were pitiful in Paris, whilst Real ruled supreme in Madrid. Jose Mourinho has never been knocked out of the Champions League at the quarter final stage before, but it is a distinct possibility now following a 3-1 defeat to Paris St Germain. The third goal could prove to be crucial as it came in the 90th minute, and it now makes Chelsea’s task much tougher, however, one positive note for Mourinho is that Ibrahimovic with be absent due to a half string injury. A Dortmund side that featured just 4 players from the team that dispatched Real in last season’s semi final. Cristiano Ronaldo matched Lionel Messi’s record of 14 in the tournament and one would expect him to surpass that when they met at the Westfalstadion next week.
A 1-0 defeat for Chelsea and a 4-0 win for Liverpool meant the red have spent the week top of the league. Man City still have two games in hand but a 1-1 draw with Arsenal will have dented their title hopes. Still four points behind Liverpool and with a trip to Anfield looming, Manchester City will hope that they will experience no further hiccups.
