Talk of the Turnstile – Issue 10

Welcome to issue 10 of Talk of the Turnstile

A weekend fuelled with two massive derby games, and Rooney sees red.

The Merseyside derby is always a great spectacle for the fans and neutrals, both clubs haven’t started the way they would have liked, and the form guide generally goes out the window in a game like this. With bragging rights at stake, the blue half of Liverpool will definitely have gone home the happier from this one. With the reds one up and the clock ticking, Phil Jagielka scored an absolute screamer in the 91st minute to draw the sides level. A possible goal of the season contender? Perhaps. The draw leaves both clubs in the bottom half of the table.

Fast forward to 5:15pm Saturday, and the North London derby is set to take place, and for all the hype from the previous derbies, (5-2, 4-4 scorelines etc) this one finished one a piece. A Chadli goal could easily have given Spurs all the three points, but Alex Oxlade-Chamberlain evened the scores and the game finished 1-1.

Wayne Rooney saw red last weekend, his first for United since 2009 and all of a sudden people say he is a bad captain? I seem to remember Roy Keane getting sent off rather a lot and nobody complained then? Regardless, Rooney will not feature for United at all in October and will return to the first team in November. Juan Mata take note, this is your time to prove you should start as a number 10.

Talk of the Turnstile – Issue 9

Welcome to issue 9 of Talk of the Turnstile

An absolute corker of a Super Sunday last weekend as we saw goals galore, upsets and a Frank Lampard goal that could help shape the title race for Chelsea…….

As far as Super Sunday’s go, last weekend was a great one for the neutrals. Cruising at 3-1, you can be forgiven for thinking that Manchester United would see out the game against Leicester City. Don’t take anything for granted in football, however. Questionable refereeing decisions coupled with lacklustre defending by United cost them the three points.

Now don’t get me wrong, I’m not taking anything away from Leicester but the officials failure to spot that the ball have left the pitch for the first goal and then Clattenburg’s decision not to award a foul from Vardy on Rafael, which resulted in a penalty the opposite way, changed the momentum in Leicester’s favour and from then on they didn’t look back. Cambiasso bossed the midfield for Leicester, which supports my theory he would have been useful at United and makes me wonder why no other club came in for him.

You just knew didn’t you? Fate has a habit of throwing something like this up especially in football. 1-0 up, 5 minutes to go and with City down to ten-men, Chelsea are in the ascendancy as they attempt to see out a match that would send them 5 points clear at the top. Enter Frank Lampard, the man who scored 211 goals for the blues in 648 appearances, scores the equalising goal that could be decisive in the title race. Now you may say “but it’s only September” and by saying that you’d be right, but it has given City hope and keeps Chelsea well within reach.

Arsenal and Everton both failed to qualify for the fourth round of the Capital One Cup, as Liverpool and Boro set record for amount of penalties in a shoot out.

14-13 was the final score for the penalty shoot-out between Liverpool and Middlesborough. Meaning Liverpool went in to the next round.

Here is the draw for the fourth round of the Capital One Cup.

Tottenham v Brighton

Stoke v Southampton

Bournemouth v West Brom

Shrewsbury v Chelsea

Liverpool v Swansea

MK Dons v Sheff Utd

Man City v Newcastle

Fulham v Derby

The SoccerStarz Premiership standings.

27 Sep 15:00 Chelsea v Aston Villa

With two massive derbies this weekend there should be no reason why it wouldn’t be an action packed weekend.

Talk of the Turnstile – Issue 8

Welcome to issue 8 of Talk of the Turnstile

We shall start with the exciting news about Euro 2020 and the host nations. For those of you that don’t already know, UEFA came to the decision after Euro 2012 that the 2020 edition would be played out over the continent of Europe as opposed to just one or two countries. Don’t get me wrong it’s a nice idea but you’ll lose the feeling of going to another country and really experiencing their culture and what their appetite for football is, chances are you’ll only be in that country for two days as opposed to a week and a half for example. We have the qualifiers for something like this in all fairness but hey, I don’t work for UEFA so I don’t get any say in that matter.

A positive point of this however is that countries that are not usually a contender to host a tournament of this size will get an opportunity to host certain games. Countries like Azerbaijan have been awarded the chance to host a quarter final match in their capital Baku, which is great for the nation.

I’m particularly happy as Wembley has been awarded not only the semi-finals but also the final so London should be buzzing for that. It also gives England an extra incentive to really push to reach that final. A long shot perhaps, but you’ve got to have that belief don’t you? Below is the list of host cities and what matches they will see.

Final and semi-finals
Wembley Stadium – England/London

Three group games, one quarter-final
Olympic Stadium Baku – Azerbaijan/Baku
Allianz Arena – Germany/Munich
Stadio Olimpico – Italy/Rome
New Zenit Stadium – Russia/Saint Petersburg

Three group games, one round of 16 game
Telia Parken – Denmark/Copenhagen
New Puskas Ferenc Stadium – Hungary/Budapest
Amsterdam Arena – Netherlands/Amsterdam
Aviva Stadium – Republic of Ireland/Dublin
Arena Nationala – Romania/Bucharest
Hampden Park – Scotland/Glasgow
San Mames – Spain/Bilbao

So as you can see Euro 2020 will be played all over Europe and should hopeful excite all nations that the tournament lands in. I do feel like Wales and the Millenium Stadium deserved an inclusion. It is a 74,000 capacity and is one of the best stadia I have been too. Some will notice France has not been included but that is due to them hosting Euro 2016.

Yellow is our new black!

Some of you may have seen the announcements on our Facebook page this week of the new Yellow 2015 Blind bag that has replaced the 2014 Blind Bag. So you may have guessed Yellow will be the colour of SoccerStarz for the 2014/15 season. Nice and bright don’t you think?

Our CITV bumper has been running for a little over three weeks now and if you haven’t seen it where have you been? I’ll post the it here for you so that you can have a look if you haven’t already. Have you got the theme stuck in your head yet? SoccerStarz, SoccerStarz,SoccerStarz!!

Week 5, Premier League fixtures.

20 Sep 12:45 QPR v Stoke
20 Sep 15:00 Aston Villa v Arsenal
20 Sep 15:00 Burnley v Sunderland
20 Sep 15:00 Newcastle v Hull
20 Sep 15:00 Swansea v Southampton

New York Yankees spend another week on top the SoccerStarz Premiership league table. That’s three in a row now. Can anyone knock them off this week?

We will be back again next week so make sure you check back then.

Talk of the Turnstile – Issue 7

We’re back, after a week of international fixtures ToT returns just in time for week 4 of the Premier League.

For any new player that signed for your club on deadline day this is the first opportunity they will have to impress.  Falcao and Daley Blind will be expected to line-up for Manchester United against QPR, and with United still searching for their first win the hope is, that it’ll be this weekend.

Danny Welbeck should feature for Arsenal all being well with his ankle that he rolled last week in England training. Hull City did well to bring in Abel Hernandez and Hatem Ben Arfa, both international class players and will be a major boost to Hull’s league form this year. A top 10 finish could now beckon.

Loic Remy is a Chelsea player after a summer rife with rumours on whether he would stay at Loftus Road, alas, it proved that he would not. Tom Cleverley managed to get his loan move to Aston Villa, albeit well after the deadline closed but at least he should now get regular football. Alex Song will be playing in claret and blue of the Hammers this year, a great addition by Sam Allardyce.

A look at this weekend’s Prem fixtures.

13 Sep 12:45 Arsenal v Man City
13 Sep 15:00 Chelsea v Swansea
13 Sep 15:00 Crystal Palace v Burnley
13 Sep 15:00 Southampton v Newcastle
13 Sep 15:00 Stoke v Leicester
13 Sep 15:00 Sunderland v Spurs
13 Sep 15:00 West Brom v Everton
13 Sep 17:30 Liverpool v Aston Villa
14 Sep 16:00 Man Utd v QPR
15 Sep 20:00 Hull v West Ham

With all the transfers that have gone on have you made sure your fantasy team is ready for this week? Have you used your wildcard yet?

Here are the current standings in the SoccerStarz Premiership.

Week 3

Welcome to a special edition of Talk of the Turnstile on this transfer deadline day.

We will start with the stunning news that Manchester United are about to sign Falcao on loan from Monaco. Daley Blind has also passed his medical and will be unveiled as a MUFC player today. That’s why everyone loves this day so much, anything is possible!!

So as promised we said we would reveal some exciting news today…. well we can start with the below

We have an England NEW PLAYER ALERT! Here is Jordan Henderson, Rickie Lambert and Luke Shaw.

England - Lambert, Shaw, Henderson

You didn’t think we would announce all our “exciting news” at once did you? Keep an eye on our social profiles in the next two days for plenty more.

You may have also noticed that we have being using a lot of yellow in our pictures… well we will be announcing why that is over the coming weeks also.

Transfer deadline day so far

  • Falcao will join Manchester United on loan before signing a permanent deal
  • Javier Hernandez has joined Real Madrid on loan
  • Abel Hernandez has signed for Hull City
  • Jermain Defoe has been linked with a move back to England. Arsenal and QPR are the touted clubs
  • Loic Remy is now a Chelsea player, though we knew that on the 31st August.
  • Will Negredo move to Valencia?
  • Tom Cleverley’s future still in the air, as is teammate Danny Welbeck’s.

We keep a close eye on all the transfer dealings in the window as one transfer can mean a complete change to a SoccerStarz figure. We will be watching right up until 11pm tonight and beyond to see who, if any, of the players SoccerStarz have in their catalogue move on to another club.

A long afternoon and night ahead one suspects and that’s why we love deadline day.

As always keep an eye on our Facebook and Twitter for any announcement on new players.

Talk of the Turnstile 2014/15 – Issue 5

Welcome to Talk of the Turnstile, season 2014/15, Issue 5

Who’d have thought it? After a near perfect pre-season, Manchester United were supposed to beat Swansea City… weren’t they? It would seem Ki and Sigurdsson had other ideas. A 2-1 victory was their first ever win at Old Trafford in league football. It was a shock to the system for United and Louis Van Gaal said that “their confidence had been shattered”.

So how did United respond? They signed someone of course. In comes Marcos Rojo from Sporting Lisbon and out went Nani as he returned to his former club on a year’s long loan deal.

But the most talked about deal and perhaps one that surprises most is that Liverpool have managed to buy Super Mario and I’m not talking about the plumber. Mario Balotelli has agreed to sign for the Reds in what could be a major boost to their title charge.

You may have seen the current standings for the SoccerStarz Premiership on our Facebook page earlier this week. Well, if you missed them here they are.

SoccerStarz unveil three new poses

SoccerStarz will be adding three brand new poses to their line up for the coming season. These poses will be released for a limited number of players for the 2014/15 range, but thereafter will feature more prominently starting with the 15/16 season.

The three new poses can be seen below (minus a players head).

Pointing to the Sky Pose

The “pointing to the sky pose” is the first of the three new poses for the 2014/15 season. Often seen when a player walks out on to the pitch or when a goal celebration takes place.

Pre-match line up Pose

The pose most common during the team line up at the beginning of the game or just before the national anthem

Kneeling Down Pose

Often seen during the team photo before a match, this pose shows the player down on one knee, but no it is not a marriage proposal.
